A BIT OF A FRESHEN UP

Some photos I took around Christmas time (hence the garlands) of a few new touches around our home .....

the mantle is now fixed to the wall ......

we installed some picture rails throughout the house ....

these two rooms got a fresh coat of paint

they hadn't been painted for 12 years ... (since we first moved into our home) and were in much need of a freshen up .....

and it looks a lot better than it did in this post .....

.... amazing what a coat of paint, doors and a few little touches
can do !!!

HOLIDAY (AT HOME) THINGS

This Christmas and New Year break has been so lovely, it's the first time for as long as I can remember that we haven't gone away either for Christmas or a New Year visit to The South Coast (my husbands parents and family live there) ....
this year they visited us for Christmas and the rest of the time has been a lovely relaxing holiday time at home catching up with friends and just hanging out ....
some nice things have been my new Nigel Slater cookbook ....
(I want to try everything !!!)

a new little chair purchased from a New Years Day car boot sale ...

our new addition to the coat rack, my husband's new Akubra hat, a Christmas present from his mum
(I must say he wears it very well !!!) ....

afternoons on the deck ....

Hydrangeas from the garden ....

relaxed dogs ....

.... and this book, good bedtime reading, it's written by one of the Guinness girls and it's quite an interesting read so far.

We also saw a few films, my favorite was Melancholia , there have been a lot of mixed reviews but I loved it ....

as well as quite a few trips to Sydney and quite a few pizzas at Pizza e Birra,
the seafood and prosciutto and rocket are our favorites .....

..... and quite a few trips to Gelato Messina

as well for their burnt fig gelato ...

soooo good !!!

I will get back into some more regular blogging next week ....

I've got a few new photos to show you of our newly painted and revamped home and the mantel I showed you a while back ...
(I love it !!!)

BOURRASQUE

Wish I was in Lyon, France to see this beautiful light sculpture ....

"Bourrasque" is a sculpture installed in the courtyard of hotel in Lyon for the city’s annual Festival of Lights, the 200 suspended sheets were made from an electrically conductive material that lights up when a current passes through it.

London designer Paul Cocksedge molded each sheet of paper by hand – the paper is the same size as a sheet of a3 paper ....

.... really quite magical !!!

New Years Eve ....

I can't quite believe 2011 is drawing to an end, we are planning on having a very quite night in ...

last night we had friends over for a catch up dinner on

the deck, the sunset was so beautiful ....

we ate pasta and fresh salad leaves from the garden .....

and talked and drank well into the night, actually we ended up drinking a little too much and today I'm feeling the effects .....

so I'm really not feeling like the New Year thing, and really we're not that big on New Year anyway ....

I was planning on wearing my new dress if we ended up doing something, but I'm quite happy to leave it hanging for now, I do love it though (I got it for next to nothing on ebay).

What I am looking forward to seeing are the Sydney New Year fireworks, normally fireworks don't really interest me but designer Marc Newson is in charge this year so it should be really interesting.

So here's wishing you a very, very Happy New Year and a wonderful 2012

HAPPY HAPPY CHRISTMAS !!!

Well the Christmas season is well and truly here ...

we have family staying and plan on spending Christmas day like our early Christmas last year, on the deck with lots of good food and wine, I plan on making my baked cranberry chicken (so yummy and very pretty too) and my father-in-law has arrived with lots of amazing looking vegetables from his garden including some purple carrots (can't wait to try them) .... and there will be a big bread and butter pudding made with Bourke St prune and almond bread and a flourless chocolate cake for dessert .... I think there will be some very happy tummies ....

It will be so lovely being home this year, no packing or driving long distances ....

I like spending the holidays at home.

NEW (OLD) MANTEL

This is the mantel I mentioned in my last post ...
it still has to be properly fixed against the wall but I love it ....

sadly no fireplace for it but great all the same .... I've always loved the look of the one in Anna Wili Highfield's studio and after a lot of searching I found this one on ebay, not expensive at all (actually the freight cost more than the mantel) ....

I will have to have a bit of a change around with frames and mirrors,

this is how the wall used to look ....

.... can't wait to see it up properly and start playing around with it,

I'll keep you posted !!!

NEW (OLD) DOORS

We are in the middle of giving our home a little face lift ..... it's in need of a good paint and a few small additions ....

first on the list has been replacing our front and internal doors with some great vintage ones found on ebay (for a very good price) .....

this was our old front door ....and our internal doors were just old plain ones, you can see a bit of one in this post .....

I must say I am so happy with them .... they need a bit of a paint and the front door will need to be painted black on the outside, but I can't believe the difference they make already.

I especially love the beautiful old handles ....

and the glass window in the front door ....

(it lets a lovely light in)

..... and the bathroom all now have new (old) doors,

so that's one thing crossed off the list ....

next post I will show you the old mantelpiece (another great ebay find) that we plan to put in the lounge room ...

Changed a few frames around .....

draped some paper garlands bought from Paper 2 the other day .....

(slowly getting into the festive mood)

once we get a Christmas tree I think they will be going on that .... I wouldn't mind finding another twig tree like last year .... but I do love the smell of a real tree ?

We'll see !!!

Oh, and I found this 1930's cabinet at a car boot sale today .....

.... just need to find some nice old handles for it now, I didn't get as lucky as last time, but I'm very happy with this !!!

Crazy weather here, two seasons in one day .... wore a summer dress this morning and winter woolies this afternoon !!!

WHERE CHILDREN SLEEP

I just stumbled upon this wonderful book Where Children Sleep by James Mollison .... stories of diverse children around the world, told through portraits and pictures of their bedrooms .....

James decided a way to address some of the complex situations and social issues affecting children would be to look at the bedrooms of children in all kinds of different circumstances, but he didn't want it just to be about 'needy children' in the developing world, rather something more inclusive, about children from all types of situations.
The book is written and presented for an audience of 9-13 year olds ' intended to interest and engage children in the details of the lives of other children around the world, while also being a serious photographic essay for an adult audience.

We had a little bit more of a change with my daughter Meg's room on the weekend (you may remember it from this post)

.... this time it was out with the winter bed coverings, which were replaced with some much lighter, more summery ones ....

and we hung a little Chinese lantern .....

..... much better !!!

PEAR TART

We made the yummiest pair tart on the weekend ....

it was a combined effort, my daughter made the pastry and I made the filling ....

pretty simple and pretty healthy too ....

the pastry is made with spelt wholewheat flour, LSA mix, sugar, olive oil and sea salt .....

and the filling is just pears (skin left on) a little brown sugar, lemon juice and lots of cinnamon ........

.... and we found the perfect use for the garden sieve that I picked up here a while back ....

(you may remember it from this post) ....

because really, I was never going to use it for soil, I just liked the look of it, so I'm glad it has a purpose now, I think I might even have to buy a couple more !!!

Tõnis and Marlen are one very artistic couple,

textile and object design, photography, painting, drawing

and graphic design are just some of their talents ....

"Quite often products in the shops don't suit us so we have to design our own stuff" says the couple.

Tõnis and Marlen live in the Estonian countryside with their two divine sons and dog.

I'm particularly fond of Marlen's beautiful textiles, toys, quilts, pillowcases and clothing designs ....

A little bit of spring gardening .....

the garden was overdue for a bit of a clean up

(you may remember the pics at the end of this post) .....

I'm really happy with our salad and herb garden ....

kale, basil, parsley, baby spinach and rocket as well as beetroot leaves and lettuce ...

the old horse trough makes the best planter .....

(I wish we could find some more)

It would look a lot nicer without all the wire but we share our garden with some very greedy bush turkeys so it is very needed ...

.... it really is lovely to look down from the deck onto a nice loved garden.

MY WEEKEND LOOT

I got very lucky last weekend at some local car boot sales ....

sometimes you can walk away empty handed and sometimes (like this time) you can find the best treasures .....

I already showed you my little garden gnome here but that's

just the start ....

I found a birdcage ....

this amazing vintage cage light, my favorite of all the finds ....

(and it cost a whole $3.00 !!!)

an old wooden crate ....

(perfect condition)

this vintage copper horn ....

(bought from the most adorable little boy who had his own stall)

a tealight lantern ....

a lovely vintage basket ....

this (kind of creepy) ceramic dolls heads ....

a wire cover, which is now protecting a herb pot from our local bush turkeys .....

and I even found these bookshelves, beautiful timber ....

(no home yet though) .....

and the best part ....

the grand total spent was $50.00

Let me introduce you to the works of my little friend Kenya ....
Kenya has just celebrated her 12th birthday and recently moved back to Australia after living in the USA for the past six years .... (to say she is happy to be back in Australia is probably a bit of an understatement) .... Kenya left Sydney when she was in Kindergarten, so it's lovely for her to be back, starting a new school, making new friends and exploring her home town through her much older (and very wise) eyes !!!

When I first visited Kenya and her lovely mum Georgina in their apartment (Georgina has the always inspiring BRYDIEBROWN blog) I fell in love with the little sculpture in the first pic (before I even knew Kenya had made it) ... isn't he just adorable, I've already put my order in for one !!!

Not to mention this divine paper mache donkey, which Georgina has very cleverly mounted on the wall .....

.... and this girl even makes jewelry,

each bead on this necklace is handmade from clay then baked hard and threaded on leather string ...

Oh, and she even has her own blog .....

PLANT LOVE

This plant got me all inspired to plant some more succulents on the weekend ....

I like these little ones on the deck the best .....

and they are such low maintenance plants, which I must say I like ....

and kind of teaming with the garden theme ....

when I was in Sydney on Wednesday I called into the Koskela pop up shop and bought a few goodies .... (thanks for the tip Georgina)

I can't remember the last time I have actually bought anything (art and magazines excluded) I've been making a conscious effort not to spend money .... but I just had to have a splurge on these goodies, I'm always a sucker for beautiful wooden brushes ....

and I couldn't resist these secateurs .... plus Koskela put your goodies in the most divine bags made from recycled newspapers,
always a bonus !!!

But my favorite addition has to be this plant my daughter bought for me, isn't it lovely, and I'm sure it will be much longer lasting than cut flowers in this hot weather .....

I think summer may well and truly be here in our part of the world, not sure how I'm feeling about that !!!

A LITTLE VISIT

You may remember our little foal Edie from this post ....

then a bit more of an update here ...
today we visited her at her "holiday home" ... she has been staying at a friends property for the last couple of months and my is she growing up fast !!!

I know nothing about horses, but my husband assures me her "holiday" away from her mother is for the best, something to do with weaning and gaining independence ...
and a new hairstyle by the looks of it !!!

She seems content and has made friends with some of the the other horses and even one of the little dogs.
The girls who look after her say she is the smartest horse there ....

but it was still hard saying goodbye ....

can't wait to have her back at my mum's house (where she lives) ....

which hopefully will happen in a couple of weeks.

We miss you little Edie !!!
